BAY WOKE to the sound of his cell phone ringing. He stood, shuddered at the bright sun streaming in the balcony doors, and stumbled across the room to his tuxedo coat. He dug in the pocket, fished out his phone, and looked at the screen. Rachel.

He slid his finger across the screen. “Hey.”

“Rise and shine, Mr. New York Times Best-Selling Author. It’s gonna be a great day,” his assistant said.

Bay rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. He wished he could bet against those odds. “What time is it, Rae?”

“Six o’clock,” she said in her cheery early-morning voice. “Remember you asked me to call to make sure you were awake?”

“Oh yeah. I forgot,” Bay said, already dreading the interviews and book signing scheduled for the day.

“Well, lucky for you, I didn’t. And by the sound of it, I’m pretty sure I woke you up. Now get moving, and I’ll meet you in the lobby at seven thirty sharp.”

“’Kay.”

“Oh, and Bay?”

“Yeah?”

“Wear that charcoal-gray Zegna suit with the light gray shirt. It’ll look great on camera.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Bay said unenthusiastically. “What time is the first interview?”

“Eight ten. And then we have a little over an hour to get to the next network for the second interview at nine twenty. Unless we run into major traffic, it should all work out fine.”

“And the book signings?” Bay asked.

“Two different locations, one o’clock and five o’clock. With plenty of time to get you to the airport.” Rachel cleared her throat. “Speaking of the book signing, what are the chances you can get that Jack Robbins look-alike guy to show up again?”

“Zilch,” Bay said with 100 percent confidence.

Rachel sighed. “That’s too bad. He’s quite the looker, and lordy, the crowd ate him up. I still can’t believe you were holding out on me.”

“I wasn’t holding out on you, Rae. I told you, I just met the guy. This is all one big coincidence, and trust me when I tell you he doesn’t want to get involved with any of it.”

“Are you sure? I could call him. We’ll pay, ya know.”

“He’s already on a plane heading home. You’d be wasting your time.”

Bay knew he was stretching the truth, but he didn’t want Rachel to know that King was probably getting ready to shoot the opening of a porn movie in a park. Or even worse, her trying to contact him. He would probably be at 36,000 feet by the time Bay arrived at his first book signing.

“That’s too bad” was all Rachel said, sounding disappointed.

“Look, Rae. It’s getting late, and I need to pack, get showered, and dress. I’ll see you downstairs in a bit.”

Bay ended the call and tossed the phone onto the chair. He stretched his back and mentally cursed the uncomfortable couch. The half-empty bottle of champagne and the two flutes sat there mocking him, so he took them to the bar. Then he took a seat on the couch.

Staring at the empty spot next to him, he remembered that just hours ago King had been seated there, in living color.
